The Suez Canal is one of the main maritime passages in the world for the transport of goods, since 12% of world trade passes through it. The blockage of the canal has impeded billions of dollars worth of cargo trying to cross through the passage, though efforts to clear the blockage are in process.

Almost 19,000 ships pass through the canal each year, carrying around 1,200 million tons of merchandise.

“There are well over 200 ships waiting to use the canal and the number is growing and shipping companies are making that difficult decision whether to go around Africa.” says Guy Platten, secretary general of the ICS International Chamber of Shipping.
